End of another successful year for Team Falcons. Two more British Champions in the hall of fame and four of the club representing Great Britain as part of the WAKO GB Squad.
Next year we are aiming to get most of our senior fighters training with the WAKO GB squad and continue to build on our ring sport squad as well as our tatami squad. We have a number of intermediate and novice fighters that need to step up and so we will be returning to competitions such as the KWON series to give our new fighters some much needed exposure,

I have been asked which uniforms are we going forward with in the future. We have decided that for competition quality we will stick with Top Ten Mesh uniforms and to keep the price down we will use off the shelf uniforms and then have them branded with Falcons logo etc.
The white/gold stripe will be added to the existing choice of black/yellow and black gold stripe. Note that all three uniforms have child sizes from 130cm up to Adult 200cm.
Top Ten - Cool Mesh - With Falcon Logos
Adult Sizes - Small 160cm to XXL 200cm - £80
Kids Sizes - 130cm, 140cm, 150cm - £60
9 Golds, 3 Silvers and 3 Bronzes for Team Falcons at the Southern Area Grand Slam in Winchester this weekend. The Falcons took 5 Grand Slam Southern Area Titles, a great result given the club has only attended 3 of the 4 events in the 2017 series.
Sunday 19th CIMAC Super League saw Emily Labrooy finish her 2017 season in style with gold for her individual categories, a win in her challenge fight and the CIMAC Grand Champion title for the under 16 years -37kg advanced girls. A well done to Zoya also who made it to the final of her novice category.
CLUB NEWS - New Class Times
Thursday 31st August will be the last Muay Thai class for Coach Carlos Henrique as he has decided to stop coaching at the club. For now he is opting to take time out from coaching altogether and we wish him well for the future. Personally I hope that he one day returns to coaching, wherever that may be, and continues to pass on his knowledge and experience. For now I wish him luck and happiness for the future.
As a result of Carlos’s departure, we have decided to shut the existing Muay Thai classes and will be teaching Muay Thai in the Ringsport sessions alongside the boxing and full contact kickboxing. The Wednesday Ringsport class will move to Tuesday at 7:30pm offering a 2 hour training opportunity for all Chinese Kickboxers to be able to work on their Syllabus and Sport Kickboxing on the same day. The second class will remain at 6:30pm on a Friday.
Starting Wednesday 4th September is a new Beginner Kickboxing Camp. This is a 6 week programme that run at 6:30pm every Wednesday. it is for complete beginners to be taught the basics of kickboxing whilst having the opportunity to trial all the various classes we have on offer. The aim is have all novices reach junior yellow belt standard at which point they may transition to one of the many programmes that we run. Beginners may subscribe to a maximum of two camps before having to make a decision as to which programme they wish to follow i.e. Chinese Kickboxing, Combatives, Combat Fitness, or Ring Sports.
The club will offer four main programmes:
Chinese Kickboxing - this is our black belt martial arts programme covering everything from self defence and weapon training through to sport martial arts and elite athlete development. Check out our facebook pages for the Chinese Kickboxing classes that we run in Andover, Winchester and Tidworth:
Combatives - This is a self defence and fitness programme that focuses purely on the use of fighting skills for self defence. There is no focus on gradings or competition and it is suitable for people looking to get fit whilst learning self defence skills. These session run twice a week on Wednesday and Friday. Check out the Facebook page:
Combat Fitness - This is our strength and conditioning programme suitable for both fitness enthusiasts and sports martial arts athletes. These classes are popular with our family memberships as they mum’s and dad’s to train alongside their kickboxing kids. Check out our facebook page:
Ring Sports - These classes focus on the following sporting disciplines: Boxing, Muay Thai, Full Contact Kickboxing, K1 and MMA. These classes are suitable for all levels and do not require you to be a competitor. Check out the facebook pages:
Our memberships rates for Adults, Juniors and Families are split into Silver and Gold price bands. A Silver membership allows for two classes a week and Gold provides three or more classes a week. Silver is more than adequate when first starting out however Gold is recommended for Chinese Kickboxers once they reach intermediate level as their syllabus requires them to attend all types of classes if they are to cover everything they need to learn to reach their black belts. If you have yet to try out Combatives or Ringsports then I recommend you give them a go.
What with the recent launch of Falcons Winchester and the start of Brandon Prince as a full time club coach we are entering into an exciting phase for the club. The morning combat fitness bootcamp’s are going well and we are about to launch the Falconettes, a 9:30am-10:30am morning fitness and kickboxing bootcamp aimed at the post school run market. Check out the Facebook website and please share to help spread the word:
Exciting times. See you on the mats

The course is £20 and all proceeds will go towards the four Falcons selected to represent Team GB at this years WAKO Junior European and Senior World Championships.

G’s Life Lessons - A quick and easy Paella from the Falcon Kitchen
Please note that we are cancelling all evening classes on Wednesday 28th June due to a point fighting seminar being held at the gym. Details about the seminar to follow.
It is that time of year again and we have decided that the next grading date for all full colour gradings will be Sunday 25th June. If you are planning to take your grade please register through your club instructors.
We have decided to set specific dates for people to do their Junior Colour Belt assessments. If you are not ready for the full colour now and looking to grade in September, we are recommending that you do the junior belt assessment. This is a two hour coached session during which you will be taken through everything you need to know for your next full colour grade. You will receive both your junior belt and certificate, more importantly you will have a personalised traffic light development plan which will highlight where you are on your road to the next full colour belt.
A GREEN light will indicate your technique and level is good to go. ORANGE will indicate that you know the syllabus but that the technicque needs work to bring it up to the required level for your full colour belt. RED will put a focus on CRITICAL RISKS. Essentially it means you don’t know the technique or the level of skill is unacceptable and will result in a fail if you took your full colour grading.
The idea going forward is that all Junior belts within the club should have a personal development plan. This allows coaches to focus on those areas when running classes paying particular attention to people with critical risks.
The dates for Junior Orange, Junior Green and Junior Blue have been set as follows:
Tuesday 13th June - 5:30-7:30pm - Junior Orange
Tuesday 20th June - 5:30-7:30pm - Junior Green
Tuesday 27th June - 5:30-7:30pm - Junior Blue
Junior Purple - Date to be confirmed
If you are planning on doing the Junior Gradings please register your name with your club instructor. All gradings whether Junior or Full colour will cost £25.
See you on the mats

New Falcons COMBATIVES programme every Wednesday and Friday 7:30-8:30pm #selfdefense #fitness #conditioning #weightloss #beginners #nogradings #allwelcome (at Fighting Falcons School of Martial Arts)
A fun day out in Winchester for Team Falcons with many of the Peregrines and Kestrels making their debut at the Southern Area Grand Slam. Not a competition we normally attend as a club but a great opportunity for our juniors to make their debut and get a feel for what competition is all about.
21 fighters took to the mats brining home a haul of 17 trophies, 6 Gold, 9 Silver and 2 Bronzes. We saw some really good performances from the beginners and some classy displays by senior fighters Brandon Prince and Callum Hollinshead. Its not the usual standard that these two fight at, but a great opportunity for our juniors to see their coaches in action for the first time.
As head coach I felt it important for our senior fighters to compete in front of our young debutants and junior fighters. Through leadership and example, win or lose, they inspire our younger fighters to be better. This is how champions are made.
Well done everyone, very proud of you all
Team Falcons Head Coach

Falcon Ring Sports will offer tuition in Boxing, Full Contact Kickboxing, K1 and MMA. The aim is to provide a development pathway for anyone looking to compete in the ring but not really interested in learning the full martial arts content that our Chinese Kickboxing Syllabus provides. These sessions will run on Wednesday 6:30-7:30pm and Friday 6:30-7:30pm
Falcon Combatives is a new programme which focuses on fitness and self defence. Classes will involve a workout, skills development and then self defence application. Classes run twice a week Wednesday 7:30-8:30pm and Friday 7:30-8:30pm

Cancelled/Closed Classes - Easter is around the corner, please remember that we do not open on bank holidays and there will be no classes running in either Tidworth or Andover on Friday 14th April and Monday 17th April.
Andover and Tidworth will not be running classes on Thursday 27th as we have a fighting seminar with USA All Star and WAKO Champion Jack Felton.
Tidworth will be shut on Thursday 4th May due to local council elections.
Effective immediately the Elite Athlete Programme will be suspended as a few of our senior fighters need to be concentrating on their GCSE’s. Attendance has already been dropping off as of late and so I feel now is a good time to stop the sessions all together. I may revisit this decision after the GCSE’s have finished.
Jack Felton Seminar - On Thursday 27th April we will be hosting USA All Star Jack Felton at the Andover gym. Jack is a highly successful fighter with a wealth of experience in both point fighting and full contact kickboxing. His strong and direct fighting style relies on very good basics and I feel this is a fight seminar that will benefit all levels and disciplines. The price is £30 which needs to be paid in advance please. I shall be collecting money in class over the next few weeks.
Kiraly Summer Camp - The Kiraly summer camp starts on 29th July finishin on 6th August. Cassius and myself will be attending this camp so if you wish to travel with us please let me know and I will confirm our flights once I have booked.
After winning the two biggest UK competitions as a novice, Emily Labrooy took a step up in class to compete at the WAKO GB Nationals earlier this year. A bronze medal meant an invite to WAKO GB squad training and the start of her competition career at advanced level. This Sunday saw her beat current British Champion Ellie Doyle in the under 16’s advanced girls. It was a mature display from Emily who took the lead with a strong kicking display and then good movement in the later half of the fight to hold her opponent off. It was a great achievement in light of the fact Emily had previously lost a close fight with the same Ellie Doyle in the semi finals of the under 12’s division.
Next bootcamp starts April 10th. Book your place now with a £20 deposit. Contact firstname.lastname@example.org for more info. #combatfitness #feeltheburn #teamfalcons (at Fighting Falcons School of Martial Arts)

WHY MARTIAL ARTS IS GOOD FOR CHILDREN
My son Cassius has been exposed to martial arts since the day he was born. He started classes at the age of four and will continue to study whilst he’s of school age. To me the practise of martial arts is as important to his development as learning English, Maths & Science as it teaches many life skills: you learn self-discipline, it improves focus and concentration, you build friendships and bonds with people from a variety of backgrounds and beliefs, it keeps you fit and gives you a level of competency when it comes to being able to defend yourself. However, I think the most important thing that I have taken from martial arts is an inner belief. It doesn’t matter how academically or physically gifted you are, without self-belief it is difficult to succeed in life. As your martial arts ability grows, so too does your self-confidence and your belief that with the right motivation and dedication you can do or be anything you want to be. You realise that the only thing holding you back is fear… the fear of failure, the fear of ridicule and even the fear of success itself. Through gradings and competitions, the modern day martial artist is challenged to face and overcome their fears; this teaches you that real growth and success comes not from the final goal but from the trying, failing, and trying again.
Sunday 29th January saw Team Falcons at the Watford Open Nationals. 18 fighters travelled and after a long day of fighting brought home a an impressive 15 medals.
The day started with the younger cadets where Cassius Mitchell, Harrison Marney, Ruby Bailey and Artyom Sharov all took bronze. Sharov did particularly well taking a bronze in both his points fighting and light contact categories. Cadet Jess Marney took a silver in her point fighting division whilst young Kian Welch from Tidworth and Andover’s Emily Labrooy went one better and took Golds.
Next up were the older cadets where Joanne Gillespie and Kyle Schulze both took a B bronze medal. Kyle had a great day on the mats showing he has the potential to compete successfully at elite level.
In the Junior Adults Alex Kynaston gave a good performance to take bronze In her senior division. Callum Hollinshead and the Falcons fighter of the day took a gold in the -60kg and then a silver medal at -65kg in a final that went to sudden death.
In the Adult divisions Brandon Prince took a Silver in the -80kg points fighting but had to pull out of the -75kg due to illness. Earlier in the day he also took a Silver in the Team event where he formed part of mixed team made up of fighters from Team GB, Team Norway and Team Belgium.
3 Golds, 4 Silvers and 8 Bronze medals, a great start to the 2017 season. The next major on the calendar for Team Falcons will be the WAKO GB Nationals in February followed by the Irish Open in March.
This Friday there will be no classes, sorry for any inconvenience. Coach Mitchell
at Fighting Falcons School of Martial Arts
Happy New Year and the start of yet another competition season. A few announcements…
1. Adam North will be taking on the role of Assistant Coach for the Competition Team. With more and fighter fighters coming through the demand on myself gets greater at each competition and having Adam formally take on the role will ensure we get the right support for all of our fighters whenever they are on the mats. He will be taking an active role in the development of the Team and will no doubt be giving you all the benefit of his experience during our EAP sessions.
2. Brandon Prince will take over the role of Team Captain from Coach North and vice captain Jon Van Den Heuvel will continue in his role as the Lead for Light & Full Contact.
3. EAP sessions be back as of next week starting on Tuesday 10th January the focus for us will be preparation for both the Watford Open and WAKO GB nationals in February.
4. We are looking to develop the novice and junior fighters that have started to show an interest in competition and so we will be opening the EAP sessions to any member of the club that would like to benefit from training alongside our Elite level fighters.

Following the grading this weekend we will be implementing some changes to the way we run and coach the classes in both Andover and Tidworth. In the past we have separated technical and competition classes and tended to focus on higher level syllabus work on a Tuesday night. Not everyone can or wishes to train everyday and this means some students are missing important sessions that is hindering their development as well rounded martial artists.
I have decided that going forward we will have an area of focus which will change on a weekly basis. Whatever the focus, we will be concentrating on those skills across all classes irrespective of whether you are training at Andover or Tidworth. The Elite Athlete Sessions will continue to run as of January and will be opened up to all members. anyone wanting to work on their Competition skills will have the opportunity to trading alongside the senior fight team. This does not mean that people can miss out on developing their competition skills as sometimes the weekly focus may well be competition fight training.
This week the focus is Personal Pad Drills. These are drills developed by Purple belts upwards and needed for Brown and Black Belt. Like the normal hand and kick pad drills they are used to teach and practise fighting skills and tactics. They can be competition format specific or for self defence. The purpose of personal drills is for each person to reflect on their fighting style, to identify their habits, think about how they fight and to turn their fight game into specific drills that can be taught to others.
Purple brown and black belts please be ready to showcase your skills in class as I will be calling on you to show everyone your secrets.
See you on the mats
The last classes in 2016 will be Thursday 22nd December. We will be back in action on Tuesday 3rd January.
Please remember that there are no classes tomorrow as we have the clubs Christmas Party.

Everything in your life, the good and the not so good, is a reflection of the choices you have made. If you don’t like where you are then change what your doing. It’s important to recognise that in life we all make bad choices, it’s not the bad choices that define you but how you learn from them and move forward. Even when we have made good choices, we must recognise those choices for what they are so that going forward you will continue to choose correctly. When things are going well it is so easy to let complacency creep up on you. You forget how you got there in the first place and before you know it, you let slip the good habits and find yourself on that slippery slope.
The Falcons elite athlete programme focussed on the development of fighters hose aspiration is to represent Great Britain at European and World Championships.
It’s all about the journey, at Team Falcons the journey is both challenging and rewarding.
Excellence Is An Attitude
